Ideas for Location and Reconnaissance

Ideas for Location and Reconnaissance

Location Ideas
Horror films typically use isolated locations to convey the idea to the audience that the characters living their have nowhere to escape or seek help because they are in the middle of nowhere.  The idea of isolated locations are shown through the use of islands, forests and fields.  These locations are use throughout all sub-genres of Horror and they are used in Possession films to tell the audience that the characters cannot seek any help or relief from the thing that is possessing them.  Most of the films also happen at night time, further promoting the idea that there is no one to help the characters.  Here are some typical locations featured in a number of Possession films:

 - The Exorcism of Emily Rose
This scene from the film is set in a barn, which is associated with farms, which are associated with isolated locations since farms are surrounded by fields.  It creates fear and excitement for the audience because it gives them the idea that the characters cannot receive and outside help.
 - Insidious: Chapter 2
This house is very large, abandoned and isolated, creating fear for the audience because it links with the fear of the unknown since we do not know why the house is abandoned, what lurks inside and why is it in an isolated location.
 - Insidious
This location is surrounded by other house, however it is a very large house, another convention for the Horror genre.  Large houses are more effective because it allows the evil being inside to hide in many places, creating fear for the audience.

 - The Possession
This house is very much like the house in Insidious, but is also surrounded by trees, further linking with isolated locations.  Trees block the view from people, promoting the idea that the characters cannot gain any outside help.

Location Scouting
I want my film to be set in an isolated location to keep within the conventions of the Horror genre.  To be able to achieve this I scouted suitable locations for the film and found a few ideal locations.

 - Edinburgh Drive, Ickenham, UB10 8QY.

This location is surrounded by other houses and is not very isolated, however it will make audiences believe that the events in the trailer could happen to them, since it is a very normal home in a very normal area.  This can help the trailers effectiveness, however I still would prefer an isolated location to keep in line with Horror conventions.

- Oldfield Lane North, Greenford.

This house will be a great stock location because it looks modern, while also looking isolated due to the trees.  However there are multiple houses surrounding the home, taking away the idea that the house is in an isolated location, which is something I would like to achieve with my setting.
- Mansfield Lodge, Slough Road, Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, SL0 0EB.

This location is perfect since it is in a very isolated location with many tress surrounding the home.  It is the most conventional setting for a Horror film and gives the idea that the people living inside have nowhere to turn to when things go wrong.  One problem with this setting is that there is one more house next to the stock location, however in the trailer we could either not show it at all through the use of certain camera angles or we could portray the house as abandoned.  The house is very large as well, another location convention of the Horror genre, giving the audience the idea that evil lurks inside and could be anywhere within the house.  The exterior of the house looks modern and expensive, with cream coloured walls and hedges around the front of the house.  This gives the impression that the family is successful and rich.

The interior of the house tells the same story as the exterior, with wooden flooring and large rooms giving us the sense of wealth and success.  However these large rooms can be used to scare the audience, as the evil can be lurking anywhere within these rooms.

This location is the perfect setting for our Horror film so this is the stock location that I will be using for my trailer.  One reason my group and I chose this location was because it was very spacious for us to film in, allowing us to film wide shots even in the more smaller locations of the house.  Another reason was because it was conventional of the Horror genre and Possession sub genre, since it is a very large house in the middle of nowhere and has an olden feel to its structural design.  The house is over 100 years old, suggesting there is a lot of history to uncover, another convention of the genre.
